Porter’s OT Goal Lifts No. 17 CSUSM to Upset of No. 12 Vanguard

The Cougars are 2-1 against ranked opponents in 2012

Box Score

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos forward Dani Porter scored less than two minutes into the first overtime to lift the 17th-ranked Cougars to a 2-1 road upset of No. 12 Vanguard on Saturday afternoon at Vanguard Soccer Field.

Porter collected a deflection off a defender before placing a shot into the top right corner from the top of the box. The sophomore's third goal of the season handed the Cougars their second-straight win over a ranked opponent. CSUSM downed No. 7 Westmont 3-2 last Tuesday, also in overtime.

"Getting two wins over ranked opponents this week is huge for us," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "I don't feel like we played well for the first hour of the game, but we were able to turn things around and had them on their heels in the second half. Then, we finally got our golden goal."

CSUSM improves to 5-2-1 on the season and has gone 2-1 over its last three games - all against ranked opponents. The Cougars' schedule won't let up after a week off, as CSUSM travels to Salt Lake City to face No. 20 Westminster (Utah) and No. 22 Carroll (Mont.) on October 5 and 6.

Fellow Cougar forward Shelby Bush gave CSUSM an early lead, dribbling past a pair of defenders before finishing into the left side of the net from the top of the box. Bush and Porter currently share the team lead in goals scored.

The Lions were granted a penalty kick 11 minutes later in the 33rd, and Amanda Couch converted from the spot to make it 1-1.

The teams battled for the next 57 minutes without a deciding score, until Porter's gem in the 92nd minute guaranteed the Cougars' second OT win in as many games.

Vanguard edged CSUSM in shots, 8-7, and won the corner battle, 5-2. However, five CSUSM shots were on frame compared to just three for VU.
