Anthony Renteria Chosen in 39th Round of MLB Draft

The senior left fielder is the second CSUSM player in the past two seasons to be selected

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos left fielder Anthony Renteria was chosen by the hometown San Diego Padres in the 39th Round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, it was announced Wednesday. The senior out of Temecula was the 1,185th overall selection.

Renteria, the son of fifth-year San Diego bench coach Rick Renteria, was selected by the Padres in the 32nd round of the 2007 MLB Draft out of Great Oak High School before electing to attend college. After spending two seasons at Palomar College, the younger Renteria started 40 of 48 contests in 2011 for the Cougars, hitting .336 with 29 RBI, four home runs and eight doubles.

He batted .331 with 12 home runs, 46 RBI and a .630 slugging percentage during his final season at CSUSM, posting team highs of 48 runs and 24 walks. Renteria earned Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) First Team recognition this year.

Renteria is the second CSUSM player drafted in the past two seasons and is the only representative from the 2012 Cougar squad. Last season, Johnny Omahen was the first-ever Cougar to be selected.
