Cougars Face First Conference Test Saturday


SAN MARCOS, Calif. – After a two-week break, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team resumes its season on Saturday against A.I.I. Conference-foe No. 12 Ashford (Iowa) and Trinity Western (Wash.).

The 2012 Westminster Fall Invitational will be covered by both live video  and live stats this weekend.

SOCC-TOBER IN SAN MARCOS
The Cougars' matches in Utah will be their last on the road this season. CSUSM will play its final six contests of the year on Mangrum Soccer Field, including the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament Nov. 9-10.

RECENT PAST
The Cougars are 1-2-1 over their last four games, including a 1-0 win over The Master's College on Sept. 11 and a 1-1 tie against then-No.18 Biola on Sept. 19. Vanguard recently escaped with a 1-0 overtime victory against CSUSM on Sept. 22, the last time the Cougars were on the field.

ASHFORD ON-LINE
Ashford, known for its extensive online learning program, is unbeaten in its last 10 contests (8-0-2). The Saints have outscored their opponents 12-1 over their last three games, including a 4-0 win against then-No. 19 Hannibal-LeGrange University on Sept. 29. After not being included in the Preseason NAIA Coaches' Poll, Ashford has been ranked four consecutive weeks. CSUSM fell 1-0 in its only contest with Ashford on Aug. 27, 2011.

TRINITY
CSUSM has never faced Trinity Lutheran to date. The Eagles have dropped two straight after putting together a four-game winning streak, Sept. 9-22.

NOTES
Jake Kaiser and Tyler Spitznagel accounted for the Cougars only scores over the last four matches … CSUSM is ranked fifth in the Conference/NAIA/Unaffiliated Group Poll … Ashford holds the second-most wins in the A.I.I. behind Jamestown (N.D.) (10-1) … CSUSM hasn't lost on a neutral field since 2010.

A.I.I. TOURNAMENT COMING TO CSUSM
A year after the men's and women's soccer teams hoisted the A.I.I. championship banner, Cal State San Marcos will host this year's A.I.I. Championship Tournament November 9-10 at Mangrum Field and the Multipurpose Field. The six-game tournament will crown a men's and women's champion and hand two automatic NAIA tournament berths to the winners.
