LA SIERRA ENDS COUGARS' STREAK
The Cougars' had won back-to-back games heading in to last Friday's match with La Sierra, but the Golden Eagles escaped with a 2-1 win. The dropped game moved CSUSM to 0-1-1 against Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) opponents this season. The Cougars are likely looking at the fourth seed come the A.I.I. Tournament Nov. 9-10 at CSUSM, and may see La Sierra again. The Cougars are 5-2 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
WINNING THE LIONS' SHARE
The Cougars are 3-0-1 all-time against Tuesday's opponent, SOKA University. CSUSM took down the Lions last season, 3-2, in Aliso Viejo, behind two goals from
Jake Kaiser and a score from
Alex Brunsell. Kaiser scored the game winner in the 88
th minute. SOKA is 0-4-2 in its last six contests.
GRIFFINS ON A SLIDE
Westminster comes to San Marcos 0-1-1 in its last two games after riding a four-game win streak between Sept. 30-Oct. 14. Ryan Smith leads the Griffins with eight goals on the season while Jace Maxfield has pitched-in with three. The Cougars have never beaten the Griffins, dropping a pair of one-goal games in 2008 (2-3) and 2007 (1-2).
DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE?
Sophomore midfielder
Alex Brunsell has been a driving force behind the Cougar offense over the last three games. CSUSM has scored eight times within that span, with Brunsell providing the assist on five of those goals. That's a rate of nearly 63-percent. He had two assists in each of the Cougars' back-to-back wins against Marymount and Point Loma Nazarene, before adding another on
Scott Rice's goal against La Sierra. His six assists on the season tie him for CSUSM's record for assists in a single season, shared by
Jake Kaiser (2010), Bradley Seidenglanz (2006) and Curtis Marcikic (2006).
NOTES
Ryan VanDenburg has scored four goals over his last three games and was named AII Player of the Week last week … CSUSM's Senior Day will be on Tuesday, October 30 against Bethesda at 1:00 p.m. … The Cougars have lost their last two games against La Sierra after winning their first five contests against the Golden Eagles … CSUSM is 3-1-1 at home this season with three home games plus the A.I.I. Tournament remaining.
