No. 11 Volleyball Downs Chapman in Four Sets

SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos women's volleyball team defeated the Chapman Panthers in four sets at home Tuesday evening, proving to be the stronger of the two cats as the Cougars rolled to a 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18 victory.

The win was the third in a row for CSUSM, who received a standout performance from junior outside hitter Jaycee Arthur. The 5'10” junior from Ramona shined throughout the match, recording a match-leading and career high 16 kills, shattering her previous best by four kills. Arthur shined on all aspects of the game, recording nine digs and three service aces in addition to her efficient .433 hitting percentage.

CSUSM broke the game open in the first set with three consecutive kills by Taylor DeGraaf after the Panthers closed the score to 8-7. This opened up the floodgates for the Cougars, who ended up scoring nine straight points with Brittany Thompson serving, effectively winning the set for San Marcos.

Chapman returned the favor to CSUSM in the following set by winning nine straight points after an early 8-8 tie, and went on to take the second set.

After that, it was all Cougars, led primarily by Arthur and DeGraaf offensively, as the duo recorded 30 of the team's 52 kills. Taylor DeGraaf ended up with 14 kills, and also contributed four service aces, two blocks, and nine digs.

CSUSM as a team recorded 13 aces and six blocks, and outhit Chapman .236 to .130. Libero Nichole May did an excellent job receiving shots from opposing attackers, and finished the game with 16 digs. Setter Alyssa Foster recorded 50 assists in the victory.

CSUSM improves to 17-8 on the season, while Chapman falls to 12-4. The Cougars will wrap up a four game home stand on Thursday against San Diego Christian at 7:00 pm.
