La Sierra Escapes with 2-1 Win Over CSUSM

Box Score
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team doubled La Sierra in shots, 12-6, but the Golden Eagles left Mangrum Soccer Field with a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) competition.

The Cougars (3-6-3) went down early in the second half, but answered with Scott Rice's header off Alex Brunsell's cross in the 59th minute. The Golden Eagles (7-8-1, 1-0-0) got the deciding goal in the 70th , however, on Bryan Gutierrez's breakaway score.

“I feel disappointed that we couldn't bring the right focus and energy to the game today. La Sierra just showed that they wanted to win more than us, and that was the difference in today's game,” said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers.

The Cougars and Golden Eagles may face each other again when the A.I.I. Tournament comes to San Marcos, Nov. 9-10.

The Cougars turn around to face SOKA University at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23 at Mangrum.
