Point Loma Snaps CSUSM's Unbeaten Streak

Box Score
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team fell to NCAA Division II opponent Point Loma Nazarene 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.

The loss marks CSUSM's (8-3-2) first since Sept. 22 and ends a six-match unbeaten run. PLNU improved to 10-2-1 overall.

Nicole Craft headed-home Kallie Caldwell's corner kick in the 35th minute before Caldwell made it 2-0 via a penalty kick in the 58th.

“They're a good team. Their women are tough. They're physical and fast. We just weren't good enough today,” said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers.

The Cougars nearly put one on the board early, as Kelsey Gunion ricocheted a 25-yard shot off the crossbar. In the 24th minute, Dani Porter headed Kaleigh Dodson's corner across goal and PLNU keeper Tiffany Kracy did well to catch Shelby Bush's one-time volley.

The Sea Lions pushed forward toward the end of the half, winning a corner kick on defender Jessica Van Loo's run down the right flank. Caldwell bent the corner to the near post and Craft rose to pound it past CSUSM goalie Amanda Sears.

“I thought we played better in the first half. We had them on their heels for a bit there. They made a play on the corner to get the goal and in the second half they put us on our heels,” said Pulvers.

PLNU added another 13 minutes into the second frame, as Amanda Mitchell was held inside the box by a CSUSM defender. Caldwell stepped up to take the spot-kick and buried it inside the left post.

CSUSM did have a couple opportunities to get one back, however. Porter and Jacqueline Lara played a clever wall pass inside the left side of the box, but Porter's touch let her down as she dribbled across the end line.

With 23 minutes remaining, Dodson fired a pass across the top of the box from the left side. Bush lined up the shot, but missed high and wide.

The Cougars look to get back on track at home on Friday at 4:00 p.m. against NCAA Division III's UC Santa Cruz.
