SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team scored twice in 63 seconds in its 2-0 win over Point Loma Nazarene Wednesday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.
The Cougars improve to 3-5-3 on the year. CSUSM has won back-to-back games for the first time in 2012. They beat Marymount College 5-2 last Wednesday.
Despite the win, CSUSM's coach is certain there's room for improvement.
“Our approach to the game was poor. The focus was poor. The result was good, but we're going to have to get much better moving forward from here starting Friday,” said head coach
Ron Pulvers.
CSUSM will face Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) foe La Sierra on Friday afternoon. The Cougars may face La Sierra when the A.I.I. Tournament comes to CSUSM Nov. 9-10.
Both teams started flat in a game played in the 90-degree heat. After a lack of action in either box, the Cougars won a series of corner kicks 10 minutes in.
Alex Brunsell connected with
Eric Lopez on the Cougars' third try. Lopez flicked the offering to the far post for his second goal of the year.
The Cougars picked the ball from the Sea Lions off the ensuing kick off and promptly won another corner. Brunsell played it to the front post and
Ryan VanDenburg headed it into the top of the net.
The goal marked VanDenburg's fourth score in his last two games.
“Bottom line is, we got the result. We have another opportunity to get one Friday, so we've got to come into it with the right approach,” said Pulvers.
Friday's match against La Sierra is CSUSM Athletics' Faculty/Staff Appreciation Game. CSUSM faculty and staff will be honored at half time during the contest.
