Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Labor Day Tournament

Cougars defeat SDCC in straight sets, lose to #5 Biola the same way

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Cal State San Marcos' second day at Biola's Labor Day Tournament finished much the same as the first:  a convincing win in the morning match, then a straight-sets loss in the afternoon.

Of course on Friday, that morning win came against #1-ranked Fresno Pacific; but on Saturday Coach Andrea Leonard's team was still able to move to 9-5 in its first season of competition, defeating San Diego Christian in the morning before losing to #5 Biola in the afternoon.

San Diego Christian drops to 2-6 on the year, while Biola improves to 9-3.

The Cougars won the early game easily, taking it in three sets.  Taylor DeGraaf led the team with 13 kills and 3 aces, Nichole May recorded 14 digs, and Taryn Salcedo tallied 18 assists and an ace.

The afternoon would not prove so kind, as #5-ranked Biola won three close sets:  25-21, 25-20, and 25-23.  The Cougars had their chances, particularly in the second set when they led 19-16 before Biola won 9 of the final 10 points.

CSUSM will be at Point Loma next weekend for another tournament, their last before opening their home season at Escondido High School on Tuesday, September 13th against San Diego Christian at 8:00 PM.
