Box Score After a pair of losses by the slimmest of margins to open the season, Cal State San Marcos men's soccer faced a brutal test against a very strong and #12-ranked Azusa Pacific side, falling 2-0 in a hard-fought game played at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.
CSUSM drops to 0-3 on the year. Azusa improves to 2-0.
The winless record is not a result of poor play by any stretch. Coach Pulvers' has generally looked good in its early season matches, creating opportunities and holding possession for stretches against three very capable opponents. Rather, the squad has struggled to find that finishing touch in front of the net, and struggled to put together 90 minutes of mistake free football.
With the team's history of bouncing back from tough starts, Coach Pulvers is confident his team can turn it around.
“I felt like we had some good opportunities and we're really close to converting these games into results,” commented Pulvers. “At the end of the day, the other team is making more plays in front of the goal than we are. We'll make it.”
Azusa scored first in the 31st minute, then again in the 59th. APU out-shot CSUSM 13-8.
The Heritage Club Classic will continue Monday with CSUSM facing host school Westmont.
