Andrea Leonard's Cal State San Marcos volleyball team turned in a very promising performance last week at its first-ever tournament, going 3-2 at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Classic, Friday was the day the program officially arrived.
After pulling a shocking five-set upset of #7 Lewis-Clark State earlier in the day at the Biola Holiday Inn Summer Slam, the Cougars backed it up with a more comfortable four-set victory over #14 Southern Oregon at night.
CSUSM improves to 5-3 on the year, and perhaps more importantly announces its presence with two wins over top-notch programs. Southern Oregon falls to 1-2. CSUSM won 25-19, 23-25, 25-16, and 25-22.
Lindsey Sappington had an outstanding match, leading the team with 18 kills and a fantastic .417 hitting percentage. Southern Oregon actually out-hit the Cougars .267 to .248, but the service game was a huge difference, with CSUSM recording a program-best 17 aces to Southern Oregon's 4.
Tied 9-9 in the first set, CSUSM won 10 of the next 13 points to take control, going on to win 25-19. The second set came down to the wire, with Southern Oregon winning the last two points to take it 23-25, evening the match.
Undeterred, the Cougars came back stronger than ever in the third, with Sappington recording three consecutive early aces to give CSUSM a 4-0 lead. The Cougars would win the third set easily 25-16, and out-last the #14-ranked team in a close fourth set 25-22. Taylor DeGraaf ended the match with a kill from a Nichole May set.
Coach Leonard's team will look to continue the momentum through tomorrow's action at Biola when they take on William Jessup and Westmont.
