After a day one performance that had them just two strokes off the lead, #18-ranked CSUSM men's golf settled for third place at the A.I.I. Conference Championships on Tuesday in Victoria, TX.
Coach Greg Hutton's team shot a final round 310 to follow up Monday's rounds of 309 and 300, giving the team a total score of 919 for the event. That earned CSUSM third place, three shots behind host school Houston-Victoria, whose final round 304 put them at 916 for the event. Day one leader #7-ranked U. of British Columbia went on to win the event, shooting 303 on Tuesday for a total of 910.
CSUSM placed three shots ahead of #21-ranked Victoria (BC), as well as four more schools in the 8-team field.
Cougar golfer Adam Loran entered the final round as the tournament leader, shooting a 78 to finish in third place with a total of 225. Robert Nicanor shot 80 on Tuesday to tie him for 11th at 232.
The team's top performer on the day was Marco Gomez, who after his team-worst first round 85 Monday morning, shot his second consecutive tidy round of 74 to finish tied for 14th at 233. Kevin Ruby also broke 80 on Tuesday, shooting a 78 for a total of 235, placing him 165th. Jared Hentila rounded out the squad at 239, tied for 27th.
Coach Greg Hutton's Cougars will now look for an at-large bid to May's NAIA National Championships.
