Men’s Golf Shoots Final Round 299, Ties for 6th at Point Loma/Smee Builders Inv.

Gomez cards a -2 (70)

A nifty final round of 299 lifted Cougar men's golf two spots on the scoreboard on Tuesday, as CSUSM finished tied for 6th at the Point Loma/Smee Builders Invitational in Jamul, CA.

Playing at Steele Canyon Golf Course, the 15-team field wrapped up play under sunny skies on Tuesday after playing Monday's two rounds and chilly conditions.  The Cougars took advantage, shooting that round of 299 after back-to-back rounds of 314 on Monday.   With their tournament total of 927, CSUSM tied for 6th with Cal Baptist.  Our Lady of the Lake came back to edge Holy Names by one stroke for the team title at the event.

Marco Gomez was the story of the final round for the Cougars.  After a disastrous opening round of 89 Monday morning, he cleaned it up in the afternoon with a 76 – then on Tuesday shot a spectacular -2 (70), matching the best round of any golfer at the event.  He finished 28th at the event with a total score of 235.

Leading the way for the Cougars though was Kevin Ruby, who had no such ups and downs.  Ruby shot 76 in round one, 77 in round two, and a smooth 75 on Tuesday to tie for 11th at 228.

Next was Adam Loran, who also shot a final round 75 after rounds of 74 and 83 on Monday.  He finished tied for 18th at 232.

Robert Nicanor shot 83-78-81 for a total of 242, tying him for 48th.  Jared Hentila was one shot back,  shooting 81-83-79 to tie for 51st at 243.

Overall, it was a strong final day for Coach Greg Hutton's squad.  They'll be in action again next week at the San Diego Intercollegiate Classic.
