Competing in a field filled with NCAA teams, Cal State San Marcos finished 11
th at the San Diego Intercollegiate Classic, which concluded with Tuesday's third round.
The 12-team field was comprised primarily of NCAA schools, as well as CSUSM and Point Loma Nazarene. The Cougars, who were in 9th place before shooting a third round team score of 400, bested their local rival by two strokes, and came within five of the University of Hawaii. SMU won the tournament on a tiebreaker over Texas-Arlington, with San Diego State taking third.
Robert Nicanor had an excellent tournament for the Cougars, shooting 74-76 on Monday then a solid round of 77 on Tuesday at par-72 San Diego Country Club. Nicanor's three-round total of 227 tied him for 34th in the field.
Second were Jared Hentila and Adam Loran, who tied for 48th. Hentila turned in a strong effort by keeping all three of his rounds under 80. He shot a 79 on Tuesday after 77-77 on Monday, putting him at 233 for the tournament. Loran matched that, whooting 75-77-81 in his three rounds.
Rounding out the squad were Marco Gomez, tied for 72nd at 247 (82-82-83), and Jeff Hickman in 75th at 257 (80-87-90).
The Cougars will be back in action next week in Primm, NV at the CBU Spring Break Invitational.
