Men’s Soccer Erases 2-0 Deficit to Defeat Marymount

Box Score If the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team is one thing, it's resilient.

The Cougars have had their share of struggles this year, facing a brutal schedule and working to incorporate several new faces, but the squad rarely ever allows itself to give in and accept a loss.

The most recent test came on Sunday at Marymount-Palos Verdes, with the home team scoring twice in the match's first 10 minutes and carrying that 2-0 lead into halftime.

“We didn't get off the bus,” commented Head Coach Ron Pulvers regarding the first half performance.

But Pulvers and his team didn't quit, regrouping at halftime and coming out with renewed commitment in the second half.

“We talked about not worrying about what happened in the first half, because it can't be changed,” noted Pulvers.  “In the second half, we played more like ourselves.”

The Cougars more than came into their own in the second half – they took control of the match and never looked back.  CSUSM scored 4 times between the 45th and 65th minutes, turning the match on its head and taking a commanding 4-2 lead that would last for the remainder of the 90 minutes.

A major catalyst was Alex Brunsell, who scored a masterpiece of a goal, among numerous other contributions to the second half surge.  Brunsell's dynamic playmaking ability provides a whole other layer to the hard-nosed Cougars' game, and the freshman midfielder could be a key to the team making a deep post-season run.
