Greg Hutton's men's golf team closed out the fall season in a big way on Tuesday, finishing in third place at the Mustang Invitational.
CSUSM posted a team score of 306 in the tournament's third and final round, a day after shooting back-to-back rounds of 307 at Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita, CA. The Cougars' team total of 920 earned them third place in the eleven team field, ahead of nationally-ranked teams U. of Victoria, Holy Names, Point Loma, and Cal Baptist.
Robert Nicanor led the way for the Cougars, and picked up his first top-10 finish of the season. He shot a +3 (75) on Tuesday, which after his Monday scores of 77-77 gave him a three-round total of 229, good for 10
th in the field.
Kevin Ruby was just a couple shots back, tying for 15
th with a 231. He shot his second straight round of 79 on Tuesday after opening the tournament with a team-best 73.
Marco Gomez was close behind, shooting 232 to tie for 18
th with rounds of 80-76-76.
Adam Loran tied for 24
th, shooting 81-75-78 for a total of 234.
Jared Hentila closed out his tournament with a strong 77, giving him rounds of 77-82-77 for a total of 236, tying him for 33
rd.
It was a great top-to-bottom effort for Coach Hutton's Cougars, who will resume play in the spring looking to earn a spot in the field at Nationals.
