Box Score Playing in front of a home crowd that included over 120 fifth graders from Paloma Elementary School, Cougar men's soccer cruised to a 3-0 victory against Marymount College in their penultimate match of the season.
CSUSM improves to 10-3-2 on the year. Marymount drops to 8-6.
While the match lacked the raw intensity of the previous few, the result was just what CSUSM was looking for as they position themselves for the post-season. CSUSM out-shot Marymount 15-7 and held a 5-3 corner kicks advantage.
Kevin Ernst made 2 saves to earn the shutout in net.
CSUSM got on the board early and never looked back. In the 16
th minute,
Alex Rodriguez launched a throw-in into the box, where
Jake Kaiser found himself unmarked near the net and was able to head it home.
Then in the 33
rd minute, it was Rodriguez again creating the opportunity, hitting a perfectly-weighted pass that
Max Blumenshine was able to run on to. The keeper came out to challenge, but Blumenshine won the race, finishing with a solid one-timed strike into the back of the net.
The Cougars closed things out early in the second half, as
Jake Kaiser hit a ball into the box that the Marymount keeper failed to cover, and
Richie Kaiser was there to poke it in. The 3-0 score would hold up, giving the Cougars a 10-win season with one match left.
That match will take place this Sunday at home against La Sierra. The game starts at 1:00 PM, with Senior Day festivities beginning 15 minutes prior.
