Box Score Entering Wednesday's match against Point Loma, Cougar men's soccer was looking to get over .500 for the first time since 2006. They got about as close as a team possibly could to accomplishing that, but settled for a 1-1 tie.
The Cougars are now 3-3-1 on the year.
CSUSM came roaring out of the gates, overwhelming Point Loma in the game's opening minutes. Just under two minutes into the contest, midfielder
Miguel Jacobo found forward
Brandon Zuniga making a run. The speedy Zuniga blew past the PLNU defense, getting one-on-one with the keeper and knocking a great finish to give the Cougars their earliest lead of the season.
It wouldn't last long, however. CSUSM has struggled defending set-pieces throughout this season, and in the 16th minute a Point Loma player was taken down in the box following a corner kick. Star forward Duach Jock tucked the PK away to tie the game at one.
After the initial excitement of the first 20 minutes, neither team would be able to record another goal – though both had their chances. CSUSM in particular put ball after ball into the box, and seemingly had players open to take point blank shots – but they just couldn't find the winner.
Loyal Cougar fans stayed for all 110 minutes of action, despite the game lasting well into the evening.
CSUSM will take another shot at getting over .500 on Sunday when they host Westminster.
