Box Score Men's soccer got another much-needed win on Sunday, defeating La Sierra 4-0 at home to even their record on the year.
CSUSM is now 5-5-1 this season.
The Cougars didn't look particularly sharp early on, but were still able to control play. They got on the board in the 27th minute, when defender Troy Skomra launched one of his trademark throw-ins into the box, and Mike Nuovo got a clean header off that beat the keeper.
CSUSM would take the 1-0 lead into halftime. With the game a little closer than Coach Ron Pulvers would have liked, he stressed discipline to his squad.
“At halftime I talked about cleaning up our shape and making crisper passes,” noted Pulvers. “We came out in the second half and did just that.”
The Cougars came out recharged for the second half, playing the first half hour extremely well until they called off the dogs. In the 65th minute, freshman defender Jordan Shadeed got his second goal in as many games, striking a beautiful free kick from 22 yards out past the wall and into the corner of the net. Just two minutes later, Dan Sims picked the pocket of a La Sierra defender, and slid his shot past the keeper to make it 3-0. Finally, in the 74th minute, midfielder Miguel Jacobo found a loose ball in the box and drove it home, providing an exclamation point for the team's rush.
CSUSM will be traveling up north to take on San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay this week.
