Deng Akuien has been selected as the CSUSM Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 28 - May 4, 2014. Akuien shaved 18 seconds off his personal best in the 3000-meter steeplechase, running 9:14.70 last Friday afternoon at the adidas/Steve Scott Invite, hosted by UC Irvine. The time automatically qualifies Akuien for the NAIA National Championships and it currently stands as the 10th-fastest mark in the country this season.
