VICTORIA, Texas— Cal State San Marcos setter
Alyssa Foster was named the A.I.I. Female Athlete of the Week after being named A.I.I. Volleyball Tournament's Most Outstanding Player and leading the Cougars to its third consecutive conference championship last week.
Foster was the key component to the Cougar attack, leading the tournament with 159 assists— nearly double the amount of her closest competitor Verenice Chaparro (85) from Ashford. The junior from Portland, Oregon also compiled 32 digs, 10 kills, six service aces, and six blocks in leading the Cougars to a 4-0 record.
In the championship match against tournament host and second-seed Ashford, Foster had a huge performance with 56 assists, 13 digs, three blocks, and two service aces. The Cougars won the match in four sets 25-27, 25-23, 28-26, 25-21.
For the tournament, the Cougars hit .271 as a team thanks in large part to the precise setting from the junior NAIA All-American honorable mention from last year. Foster was also recently awarded the A.I.I. Setter of the Year for the second straight year, and made the All-Conference First Team for the third consecutive season.
As a result of winning the conference tournament, Foster and the Cougars will now play in the NAIA National Championships, where they will face No. 16 The Master's College Saturday in the opening round.Â
