SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Alumni from the Cal State San Marcos women's track and field team have introduced the Camille Wilborn Scholarship in honor of former CSUSM student-athlete Camille Wilborn, who passed away in December.
"Camille was in our very first class, cross country of 1999. She competed for me for four years in both cross country and track & field. The thing about Camille was her loving nature. She was such a great person, teammate and friend. Her level of dedication and work ethic were outstanding," said cross country and track & field head coach
Steve Scott.
The scholarship will be awarded to a women's track & field student-athlete who best embodies the spirit of Wilborn. In addition to the scholarship, the women's 800 meter competition at the annual Mangrum Invitational will now be named the Camille Wilborn 800 meter run. The race will be started by Wilborn's mother, Lucy, who will fire the gun. Proceeds from the Mangrum Invitational will also go towards the scholarship.
"Camille was a teammate that could always be counted on. She greeted her teammates everyday with a smile, no matter how hard the planned workout. She'd be the first person to lighten the mood with a joke or a dance break, and you could hear her very distinct laugh from across the track," said Samantha Delagardelle teammates with Wilborn on the cross country and track & field team and currently a member of the CSUSM Athletic Director's Council.
