SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Freshman
Jaime Jacob earned her first collegiate victory,
Christina Trujillo finished runner-up and the Cal State San Marcos women's golf team took home its first team title of the 2016-17 season with a 23-stroke victory at the CSUSM Fall Classic at Twin Oaks Golf Course.
Jacob was the only competitor in the 67-player field to finish under par, pairing a first round 69 with a second-round 73 and posting 2-under 142. She won by three strokes over her senior teammate, Trujillo, who finished at 1-over 145 (72-23).
Savannah Magallon was the third Cougar in the top-five with her fifth-place finish. Magallon carded a 74 and a 75 to finish 5-over par (149).
CSUSM took a commanding 16-stroke lead following a 2-over 290 in the opening round. The Cougars played solid in the final 18 holes, tallying 7-over 295 for a total of 9-over 585, their lowest score of the fall season.
Sonoma State finished runner up at 32-over 608 (308-300), followed by Embry-Riddle (306-318 – 624, +48) and Point Loma (319-310 – 629, +53).
Sarah Garcia came through with a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish in solo 12
th at 10-over 154.

Bergen Benedict tied for 18
th (75-83 – 148, +14) and
Emily Lichty tied for 23
rd (79-81 – 160, +16).
CSUSM's fall season is over. The Cougars play next at the PLNU Reach 2017 tournament on Feb. 6-7, 2017 at Riverwalk Golf Course.
