WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team has been tabbed to finish 11
th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) following a preseason poll of conference coaches, it was announced Thursday.
CSUSM, which is entering its first season in the CCAA and NCAA Division II, received 37 total points in the poll. The Cougars were placed ahead of Humboldt State (32 points) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (19 points).
"I think going into this season we have a lot to prove. It's our first year in the CCAA. We've never played any of these teams in a conference game and we haven't played the vast majority of these teams for a very long time," said CSUSM's second-year head coach
Bobby Renneisen. "For us, it's about showing that we're a competitive member of the conference, which we hope to be."
Reigning CCAA champion Cal State L.A. collected 130 points and seven first-place votes to finish ahead of its 12 counterparts. Cal State Stanislaus, which snagged four first-place votes, was picked to finish second with 128 points.
The Cougars return 22 letter-winners from last season's 11-3-5 campaign. CSUSM begins its regular season on Sept. 3 at San Diego Christian. The team's first home match is on Wednesday, Sept. 9 against Concordia (Calif.) at 4 p.m. in The Cougar Den.
