VICTORIA, Texas – Cal State San Marcos had three student-athletes honored as Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Athletes of the Week on Wednesday.
Dylan Healey of men's golf and
Emilio Esquibel of baseball were honored as Co-Male Athletes of the Week, while
Vanessa Chap of women's golf shared the Female Athlete of the Week honor with Mary Burk of Georgia Gwinnett softball.
Esquibel, a junior from Vista, went 2-0 on the mound and earned the victory in the decisive game against No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett in leading the Cougars to the A.I.I. Conference Championship and being named the tournament MVP.
Esquibel tossed a complete game in the Cougars' tournament opener and came back on two days rest to give the Cougars a quality start in a win over GGC in the championship game. In 14.1 innings, he allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
Healey, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., captured the individual men's title at the A.I.I. Conference Championship last week. He propelled the Cougars to the team title with his 8-under par 208 score as he coasted to the individual title with a six-shot cushion.
Chap posted 1-under par 143 for a one-stroke victory at this year's A.I.I. Championship. She put together rounds of 73 and 70 as she helped CSUSM to a second-place finish, just two shots back. Her 143 is the lowest 36-hole total in program history.
Chap, Healey and Esquibel will be the final CSUSM student-athletes to be named A.I.I. Athletes of the Week in school history. Wednesday's accolades are the last for the A.I.I. in 2014-15 and the Cougars will no longer compete in the NAIA, or the A.I.I., starting in the fall.
In 2014-15, 13 different student-athletes took home a total of 16 weekly conference awards. Blake Nash, Naomi Amu and Heather Thompson were multiple-award winners.
