SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Naomi Amu of the softball team and
Brandon Bentson of the baseball team have been named the Cal State San Marcos Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2015, respectively.
The CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all athletics department coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
Amu, a senior designated player from Oceanside, helped the Cougars to a 16-3 overall record during February – which also included a 14-game winning streak. She hit .429 with team-highs of nine home runs, 29 RBI, 13 walks and 50 total bases. She slugged 1.020 and posted an on-base percentage of .556
She was named the Most Valuable Player of the 32-team Desert Stinger Classic while leading CSUSM to the tournament championship after hitting .688 (11-for-16) with four homeruns, 16 RBI and 24 total bases. Amu currently leads the NAIA in homeruns (10), total bases (56) and RBI (33).
Bentson, a junior first baseman from San Diego, led the Cougars to an 11-4 record last month while hitting .379. He collected 22 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBI, five doubles, a triple and a homerun. He had multiple hits in seven games, including a 3-for-5, three RBI performance in a 14-3 victory over Grace (Neb.) on Feb. 22.
Since a 2-5 start to the season, CSUSM baseball has gone 10-3 to improve to 12-8 overall.
