CSUSM Puts on Show in Homecoming Night Victory

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Andrew Bournes scored a game-high 21 points and hit a critical 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining in the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's 67-60 victory over Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday night at MiraCosta College.

The Seawolves led by two with eight minutes to play, but Darnell Taylor helped the Cougars claw back, as he drained a 3-pointer to put the Cougars ahead and then converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the Cougars up by four with 1:40 remaining.

The Cougars forced a turnover on the defensive end before Taylor found Bournes along the right wing. Bournes hit his sixth 3-pointer of the night to put the Cougars up seven, 63-56, with 80 seconds on the clock.

After SSU answered with a 3-pointer, Akachi Okugo found Declan Daly for an easy lay-up. The big man was fouled and subsequently hit the free throw to keep the lead at seven with 44 seconds remaining.

SSU couldn't find its range from behind the arc, and Bournes iced the game with a free throw.

Taylor added 14 points, dished out a game-high five assists and pulled down five rebounds. Okugo had four assists and eight points.

Ronnie Harris led the Seawolves with 17 points, while Jimmy Golden pitched in 11.

As of Saturday at 11 p.m., the Cougars are one of four 2-0 teams in the CCAA, along with UC San Diego, Stanislaus State and Chico State.

Tonight's matchup was the third win on Homecoming Night in three tries for the Cougars. The women's program also beat Sonoma State earlier in the evening, 73-61, for its first-ever CCAA victory.

CSUSM continues its CCAA schedule at Chico State next Saturday, Dec. 12.
