OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Coming off three straight losses and back-to-back overtime road games, the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team reversed course with an 84-79 overtime victory over Humboldt State in the Cougars' first-ever game in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) on Thursday night at MiraCosta College.
Declan Daly put the Cougars ahead with a jumper and
Darnell Taylor sealed it with a layup with 15 seconds remaining as CSUSM improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play while handing HSU (4-1, 0-1 CCAA) its first loss of the season.
Taylor led all scorers with 23 points while dishing out six assists and corralling seven rebounds. Daly registered his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Taran Brown added 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
Thomas Witzel paced HSU with 24 points, Malik Morgan had 18 and Rakim Brown pitched in 14.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 11 in the contest, but a string of four 3-pointers from Brown pulled CSUSM even, 58-58, with 8:27 remaining in the second half.
Devin Koeplin's 3-pointer handed the Cougars their first lead since the 10:39 mark of the first half before
Andrew Bournes' drained a three to put the Cougars up by four.
However, HSU battled back and the teams traded the lead the rest of regulation.
Taylor had an opportunity to end the game as time expired, but his jumper from the left elbow bounced off the back of the rim and CSUSM headed to overtime for the third consecutive game.
Bournes scored the first bucket of the extra period, but HSU answered right back with a 3-pointer to take the lead by one.
Taylor responded on the next possession by driving and finding Daly for an easy layup to put CSUSM back up one. After a free throw by HSU tied the game 79-79, both teams went cold and neither team scored for over two minutes.
With 66 seconds remaining, Taylor once again drove the lane, drawing the defense in. Daly stepped out on the right baseline, received the pass from Taylor and drained the 14-foot jumper to make it 81-79.
Witzel tried his hand at a jumper on the other end to no avail, and the Cougars called timeout with 44 seconds remaining. This time, Taylor took it himself and banked in a tough layup with 15 seconds left to put CSUSM up four.
The Jacks then called timeout to draw up a play, but Witzel could not convert on a 3-pointer with nine seconds left.
Bournes was fouled and proceeded to hit 1-of-2 from the stripe to put the game out of reach.
CSUSM moves on to play Sonoma State on Homecoming Night this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College.
