ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team trailed at the break, but rallied for three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half before holding off Humboldt State for a 3-2 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.
HSU (1-9-2, 0-6-2 CCAA), winless in conference, felt confident heading into the break after Chuck Pitts' goal put the 'Jacks ahead in the 21
st minute. However, CSUSM leading goal scorer
Louie Farfan evened the score in the 49
th minute,
Bryson Gaitan's first career goal put the Cougars ahead in the 51
st and
Thor English added what would become the game winner in the 57
th.
Eddie Guerra assisted on both goals by Gaitan and English.
Pitts converted a penalty kick with under three minutes remaining to provide some tense moments at the end, but the Cougars saw the game out to earn their first CCAA road victory program history.
CSUSM improves to 6-6-2 overall and 4-5-1 in CCAA competition.
The Cougars have two more CCAA matches remaining, both on the road. CSUSM takes on UC San Diego in La Jolla this Wednesday before heading up to Chico to take on the Wildcats on Sunday.
As of Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. the Cougars sit in seventh place in the CCAA table with 13 points.
