Collie, Amu Named A.I.I. Athletes of the Week

VICTORIA, Texas – Cal State San Marcos swept the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Male and Female Athlete of the Week awards, it was announced Monday.

Senior forward Wade Collie was named Male Athlete of the Week while senior pitcher/designated player Naomi Amu was honored as the Female Athlete of the Week. It is the first time that either student-athlete has been awarded the conference's player of the week honor.

Collie registered 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Cougars came back from 20 points down with 6:41 remaining to eventually overtake Northern New Mexico, 100-91, in double overtime on Saturday night at MiraCosta College. He scored 10 points in a 27-5 run that helped the Cougars force the first overtime, before nailing a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left that tied the game and helped CSUSM push the contest to a second overtime.

Collie is averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and leads the team with an 86.8 percentage from the charity stripe. Over his last five games, Collie is averaging 15.6 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 50-percent (29-of-58) the field and 48.1-percent (13-of-29) from behind the arc.

Amu helped the 12th-ranked Cougars to a doubleheader split on opening day at La Verne, combining for a 3-for-6 day with four RBI, a homerun and six total bases. She belted a three-run homer in a 5-3 loss in game one, while also pitching two scoreless innings in her first start. In game two, Amu added an RBI single that helped the Cougars to an 8-0, run-rule victory in five innings.

Amu, who did not play during 2014, joined the Cougars in the summer after playing 2011-13 at the Pac-12's University of Utah. Amu is expected to be a weapon at the plate and in the circle for the Cougars this season.

The Cougars have a week off before heading to La Sierra on Sunday, Feb. 1 for a doubleheader. CSUSM softball's first home games of the season take place on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills, respectively.
