Box Score 2 LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 2-seed Cal State San Marcos softball team fell 2-1 to top-seed Louisiana State-Alexandria in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Softball Championship title game on Saturday at Grizzly Softball Complex on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett College.
Brogan Hoenisch handed the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Generals rallied for a run in each of the next two innings to take home the conference title.
CSUSM (38-7-1) and LSUA (32-3) receive automatic berths to the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.
The game was a classic pitcher's duel, as both teams combined for just 11 hits – six for CSUSM, five for LSUA. Kaycee Spears (12-3) earned the win for the Lady Generals, out-dueling the Cougars' combination of
Ashley Dagenais and
Katie Wilkinson (21-5).
Dagenais started the game for CSUSM, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing three hits and a pair of walks. Wilkinson worked the final two frames for CSUSM.
After Hoenisch opened the scoring with her solo shot to lead off the fifth, the Lady Generals took advantage of a Cougar fielding mistake in the bottom half. Kaylee Prather reached via an error before taking second on a wild pitch. Julinn Torres picked her up with an RBI single up the middle that made it 1-1.
The Cougars went down in order in the top of the sixth. Wilkinson started the bottom of the sixth with a walk to Jacie Trahan before Paulean Gonzalez' RBI double put the Lady Generals ahead for good, 2-1.
Gonzalez was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Kaitlin McGinley and Dagenais were named to the all-tournament team after the competition.
Game 1: CSUSM 7, UBC 2 Cal State San Marcos scored a run in both the first and third innings, added two in the fourth and three more in the sixth to cement a 7-2 victory over British Columbia.
Kaitlin McGinley led the Cougars offensively by going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
Melyssa Bellamy added a pair of singles, two stolen bases and an RBI.
Dagenais (13-2) earned the victory after pitching four innings without allowing a run on three hits. Wilkinson picked up her second save of the season by tossing 3.0 innings of relief.
The Thunderbirds scored both of their runs off an inside-the-park home run by Olivia Zwick in the sixth inning. Cal State San Marcos responded to tack on three insurance runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
