Miller Keeps CSUSM’s Hopes Alive with Walk-off, Three-run Double in 13th Inning

Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Alex Miller fell behind 0-2 with the bases loaded, down by two, with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Instead of panic, the Cal State San Marcos softball team's all-time hits leader showed calm, allowing three straight pitches off the plate to work the count full.

Then, she pounced.

Miller tagged Savannah Crittenden's 3-2 delivery into the right centerfield gap, clearing the bases to lift second-seeded CSUSM to an 8-7, extra-inning victory over third-seeded University of Houston-Victoria (37-6-1) on Friday night at Grizzly Softball Complex on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett.

The Cougars improve to 37-6-1 and move on to play sixth-seeded British Columbia on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. UBC topped CSUSM in the Cougars' opening game yesterday, 11-3. The winner will move on to the championship round to face top-seeded Louisiana State-Alexandria; UBC or CSUSM will have to beat LSUA twice on Saturday to win the title.

Things looked dire for the Cougars heading into their final at-bat, as UHV took at 7-5 lead in the top of the 13th on Marley Moehrig's two-run homerun.

A four-run fifth inning turned a 3-1 deficit into a two-run advantage for the Cougars, but it would have been more if CSUSM wasn't caught for batting out of order.

Brogan Hoenisch led off the frame with a single before giving way for pinch-runner Taylor Peters. Peters immediately stole second before moving to third on Brittney Guy's groundout. Then, Peters stole home when UHV was caught off guard, pulling CSUSM within 3-2.

Kaitlin McGinley then reached on a fielding error by the pitcher. She moved to second on a wild pitch and scored to tie the game at 3-3 on Caylyn Rodriguez's single to right.

A single from Miller put runners on second and third and Bellamy came aboard with a walk to load the bases. Griffin Gilbert then walked Leasau to put the Cougars ahead 4-3.

Olivia Lucatuorto added another with an RBI single to push CSUSM up two.

The Cougars batted around in the frame and Hoenisch came back up for her second at-bat of the inning. She cracked a two-out, bases clearing double that appeared to put CSUSM comfortably ahead 8-3.

However, the UHV head coach protested the play, claiming that CSUSM had not officially re-entered Hoenisch. Remember, that Hoenisch had previously been pinch-ran for by the speedy Peters.

The umpires agreed that Hoenisch had not officially re-entered for Peters, and Hoenisch was called out for batting out of turn. Instead of a gaping 8-3 advantage with a runner on and another batter at the plate, the Cougars headed to the top of the sixth leading 5-3.

The mistake would cost the Cougars, as UHV put up two runs in the at-bat to tie the game. Crittenden scored on a wayward throw on a double steal before Shelby Smith drove in Megan Huerta with a sacrifice fly that made it 5-5, and neither team could score for the following seven frames.

Miller went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Rodriguez had a 4-for-6 day and scored three times. McGinley was 3-for-6 with a pair of runs.

Ashley Dagenais started the game for CSUSM, working the first eight innings, surrendering five runs – only two earned. Katie Wilkinson (21-4) threw the final five frames, striking out five.

Miller made it 1-0 in favor of CSUSM in the bottom of the first, singling home Rodriguez after Rodriguez's one-out triple down the left-field line.

The Cougars started the top of the second with an error and Alex Holland made them pay with an RBI double to left center. Smith put UHV ahead with a two-out, two-run homerun to right that made it 3-1 in favor of the Jaguars.
