CSUSM Eliminated from NAIA Opening Round

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CALDWELL, Idaho – The 2014 campaign came to an abrupt end today for the top-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team, as the Cougars were eliminated from the NAIA Opening Round College of Idaho Bracket with back-to-back losses to No. 2-seed Oregon Tech and No. 3-seed C of I on Tuesday at Symms Field.

Jessi Duncan delivered a no-hitter for Oregon Tech in a six-inning, 8-0 victory for the Owls in the opening game. A six-run fifth inning lifted C of I, 10-2 (5 inn.), over the Cougars in the elimination game on Tuesday afternoon.

CSUSM wraps up its season 39-9-1 overall in head coach Laurie Nevarez's first year at the helm.

Oregon Tech and C of I will meet on Wednesday for The College of Idaho Bracket title. C of I must beat Oregon Tech twice in order to move on to the final site of the NAIA National Championships, May 23-29, in Columbus, Ga.

#2 Oregon Tech 8 - #1 CSUSM 0 (6 innings)

Oregon Tech hurler Jessi Duncan delivered a no-hitter and OIT rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to mercy the Cougars, 8-0, in six innings.

Duncan allowed just three base runners all morning - two walks and a hit batswoman - while striking out just one batter.

Alyssa Davis was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Cassidy Olson, Tre Sullivan and Shauna Collins each had two hits for the Owls.

#3 C of I 10 - #1 CSUSM 2 (5 innings)

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but a six-run fifth inning by C of I sent CSUSM packing early in a 10-2, five-inning loss on Tuesday afternoon in The College of Idaho Bracket's second elimination game.

CSUSM scored both its runs in the second inning, as Mallory Campbell knocked in Breana Reyes with an RBI double before scoring when Kaitlin McGinley's grounder was mishandled by the second baseman.

Paige Gabiola's two-run double in the bottom half of the second tied things at 2-2.

In the top of the third, Olivia Lucatuorto sent a two-out fly ball to left field that looked like it might be her second homerun of the tournament, but Yote left fielder Briana Brace robbed Lucatuorto of the three-run dinger with a spectacular grab at the wall.

The play turned into a five run swing for the Cougars, as Destiny Turner handed the Yotes their first lead with a two-run homerun in the bottom half of the third.

Caylyn Rodriguez notched a two-out triple to left center in the fourth, but Nickayla Skinner (22-8) sat down McGinley to end the threat without CSUSM cutting into the lead.

C of I started the bottom of the fifth with a triple before Alexis Macias' RBi single made it 5-2. The next three batters would reach before McKensie Stanton launched a grand slam to left field to effectively put the game out of reach, 9-2.

Julia Henrie walked before stealing second. She took third on a wild pitch before scoring on another wayward delivery to end the game, 10-2.

Five seniors played their last games for CSUSM at the tournament – Alex Miller, Kaitlin McGinley, Patricia Banda, Brittney Guy and Mallory Campbell.
