Katie Wilkinson delivered five solid innings and the No. 1-seed Cal State San Marcos softball team emerged victorious in its first contest of the NAIA Opening Round, 6-1, over No. 4-seed Dickinson State on Monday afternoon at Symms Field.
The Cougars improve to 39-7-1 and move on to face No. 2-seed Oregon Tech (34-12) on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. PDT (10:30 a.m. MDT). The winner advances to The College of Idaho championship game on Wednesday. The loser of CSUSM-OIT will face the winner of DSU-College of Idaho in an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon; DSU and C of I will be playing the first elimination game on Tuesday.
Lucatuorto opened the scoring for CSUSM in the top of the second, launching a three-run homerun over the left-field fence after Leasau walked and
Mallory Campbell singled. It marked Lucatuorto's third homer of the season.
DSU put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and appeared as though it would pull within one on Kailey Olcott's single up the middle. The first run scored easily, but CSUSM center fielder
Alex Miller gunned down Regan Lawrence at the plate for the final out of the inning, preserving CSUSM's 3-1 advantage.
Wilkinson (22-5) allowed three hits, struck out one and walked three.
Leasau's two-run homerun in the top of the sixth stretched the CSUSM lead to 5-1. The CSUSM catcher was 2-for-2 on the day and now leads the team with five homeruns on the year.
Caylyn Rodriguez singled in
Brittney Guy with two outs in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1.
Ashley Dagenais worked the final two innings for CSUSM in the circle.
If the Cougars beat Oregon Tech, they will play for the College of Idaho Bracket title on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. PDT (12:00 MDT). If CSUSM loses, the Cougars will play in a Tuesday afternoon elimination game against either College of Idaho or DSU at 2:30 p.m. PDT.
