No. 5 Cougars Extend Win Streak to 18 with Sweep of Hope International

Alex Miller becomes CSUSM’s all-time hit leader and drives in five RBI in 5-1 and 9-1 victories.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif.— Alex Miller drove in five runs and surpassed Alyssa Dronenburg as Cal State San Marcos' career leader in hits as the No. 5 Cougars swept Hope International University 5-1 and 9-1 Friday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.

Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game, Miller used an inside-out swing to bloop a ball over the second baseman's glove into right field, driving home Breana Fulton-Stiles for the  tying run. This would mark her 256th career hit, but Miller spent no time celebrating – alertly advancing on the throw home and drawing a throw to second base that allowed Kaitlin McGinley to come across for the lead-taking run.

Katie Wilkinson (18-2, 1.24 ERA) kept the Royals at bay after allowing an unearned run in the second inning and pitched a complete game, striking out three and allowing just four hits on the game.

The Cougars added three insurance runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. McGinley and Mallory Campbell each tallied two hits on the game.

In the second game, the Cougars jumped on the Royals early and never looked back, scoring two runs on Miller's double ripped down the left field line. Miller then scored on Tani Leasau's sacrifice bunt to make it 3-0 after an inning.

McGinley added another run in the second with a single to left field, but the Royals cut the lead back down to three with a run in the top of the fourth.

That was as close as Hope International would get, as Brogan Hoenisch single through the right side in the bottom of the fourth bumped the lead up to 5-1.

Miller doubled again in the fifth inning to make it 6-1, and the Cougars plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via run-rule, winning on Melyssa Bellamy's RBI groundout.

Ashley Dagenais (9-1, 1.11 ERA) went the distance for the win, allowing four hits and striking out a career high six batters.

With the victories, the Cougars improved to 31-3-1 on the season, and increased their win streak to 18 games— the second longest streak in school history. CSUSM won 22 consecutive games in February and March of the 2012 season.

CSUSM will put their streak to the test Sunday for a doubleheader against No. 1 ranked and defending NAIA National Champion Concordia (Calif.).  The Eagles are 39-5 in 2014. The Cougars will then wrap up their home schedule Tuesday, April 15 against University of Antelope Valley, which will serve as the team's senior day.
