Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif.—The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos softball team impressed with both its bats and its arms Friday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field, taking both games of a doubleheader against La Sierra 8-2 and 9-1 (5 inn.).
The Cougars were backed by homeruns from
Caylyn Rodriguez and
Melyssa Bellamy in Game 1, while the pitching duo of
Ashley Dagenais and
Brenna Parker held the Golden Eagles hitless in the second game.
It didn't take long for La Sierra to see that the Cougars came ready to play Friday, as leadoff batter Rodriguez turned on a pitch and sent it well over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead one batter into the first game.
However, the Golden Eagles responded in the second inning to take a lead of its own with two unearned runs.
The lead would not last long, however, as Rodriguez singled to center field to tie the score in the bottom of the third. In the same frame,
Alex Miller cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple to give CSUSM a 5-2 edge.
In the sixth, Rodriguez capped of a career day with an RBI double to left-center to add another insurance run. In all, the sophomore from Riverside went 3-for-3 and a walk, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.
Rodriguez eventually scored on a wild pitch, and Bellamy completed the game's scoring with a homerun to deep left center field for a final score of 8-2.
Katie Wilkinson (10-2) went the full distance of seven innings, allowing just four hits, two walks, and two unearned runs.
After struggling to score runs in the second games of doubleheaders over the last two weeks, CSUSM exploded with five runs in the first inning of Game 2, effectively putting it out of reach.
The Cougars stayed hot in the second inning, adding four more runs to take a 9-0 lead after two innings. La Sierra got a run on the board in the third inning after a walk, an error, and a fielder's choice groundout, but that was the last runner the Golden Eagles could manage.
Dagenais (2-1) earned the win after throwing the first three innings, allowing just two walks. Parker finished off the fourth and fifth inning by powering through the La Sierra Lineup, retiring all six batters to complete the run-rule shorted no-hitter. Parker, who started the game at first base, also went 2-for-3 with a double and 3-RBI at the plate.
For CSUSM, it was the first no-hitter since former CSUSM All-American
Cortney Allen threw a perfect game in the Cougars 2013 home-opener against La Sierra.
With the victories, Cal State San Marcos improved to 16-3-1 on the season. La Sierra dropped to 4-13. CSUSM has about a week to rest before its next game on Saturday, March 15 against William Jessup at the CSUSM Softball Field. The doubleheader will get underway at 12:00pm.
