Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos received strong contributions from both its offense and its pitching staff Saturday to run away with both games of a doubleheader at home against the University of La Verne, winning 7-0 and 13-0.
The Cougars were backed by quick starts in each of the two games and combined to throw 12 shutout innings, improving their record to 10-0 to start the season. La Verne, perennially a top team in the SCIAC Conference, dropped to 0-4 with the losses.
CSUSM's first game Saturday started with a bang— literally. After a pair of walks in the bottom half of the first,
Brenna Parker clubbed a no-doubt three-run homerun to center field to give CSUSM a 3-0 lead after an inning. For Parker, it was her third of the young season, and her second in two days after hitting a grand slam at Vanguard on Friday.
The Cougars pieced together four more runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach early, highlighted by a
Gabrielle Beasley RBI double and a two-RBI single by shortstop
Melyssa Bellamy.
After that, it was all pitching for both teams. The Leopards knocked both of their two hits in the fourth inning, but those were the only hits in the final five innings.
Katie Wilkinson threw the first two innings and allowed just a walk before
Hayley Davis (3-0) came into to pitch the next three. Freshman
Ashley Dagenais tossed the final two innings and retired the Leopards in order to secure the victory.
In the second game Wilkinson (6-0, 0.60 ERA) took the ball once again in the pitcher's circle and threw four shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two.
The story once again though was the offense, which broke through for three runs in the second inning and seven in the third to make it 10-0 after three. The Cougars were able to plate three more in the fourth inning to create a 13-run advantage.
The game ended in one of the more bizarre finishes in school history, as CSUSM turned a triple play after a soft liner with the bases loaded was narrowly one-hopped by the shortstop Beasley, causing the Leopard runners to stay on the base thinking it was caught for the put-out. Instead, the Cougars threw to home, third base, and second base for the force outs to end the game.
Melyssa Bellamy went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI's to lead the charge as the Cougars outhit the Leopards 13 to 5. As a team, CSUSM is hitting .364 on the season through 10 games.
The Cougars have a week before their next game Saturday, February 15 when they will face defending NAIA National Champion Concordia (Calif.) for a doubleheader on the road in Irvine.
