Cougars Sweep Team Titles At NAIA West Coast Jamboree

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos cross country teams ended the regular season with a bang with both teams taking the team titles at the NAIA West Coast Jamboree hosted by Biola.

Freshman Andrew Tellames collected his second consecutive individual medalist honors in a time of 25:11.8, narrowly beating Biola's Kevin Horchler.  Senior Kate Bouvatte narrowly missed out on earning her third individual title of the season as Carroll's Leah Esposito outsprinted her in the final 10 meters to take first place.

"I was a little worried today because we had such great performances last week and a lot of people got PRs," said head coach Steve Scott. "Usually when that happens, the next week you get down. So I really tried to focus that we had competition today and don't worry about time. Just worry about the level competition and try to beat the people that are here. Both teams responded really, really well."

The tenth-ranked CSUSM men's team tallied 32 points, beating second place No. 18 Carroll by 33 and third place No. 15 The Master's College by 54.

The CSUSM women's team, ranked No. 5 in the latest poll this week, concluded the race with 43 points.  No. 9 Carroll finished second with 96 points, followed by No. 7 Westmont (124), No. 13 Biola (128) and No. 10 The Master's College (146).

Four other Cougar men joined Tallames in the top ten as Zach Laurenzana, Steven Ing and Enrique Ramirez finished sixth, seventh and eighth while Daniel Ybarra earned a 10th place.

Freshman Natalie Rodriguez had her best collegiate finish thus far in her career, taking fifth place while sophomore Raelyn Werley placed seventh.

Next up for the Cougars is the A.I.I. Championships in Clinton, Iowa on Saturday Nov. 8.
