Box Score REDLANDS, Calif.— The depth of the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team continues to show itself daily, as the No. 20 ranked Cougars picked up an impressive road victory over the University of Redlands Tuesday evening, thanks in large part to Redlands High School graduate
Alyssa Hubbard.
CSUSM took the match in four sets, winning 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 30-28 with Hubbard's performance being a primary factor.
Perhaps the Bulldogs should have seen it coming, with Hubbard playing high school volleyball less than a mile down the road and with her being on a hot stretch averaging 8.25 kills and a .320 hitting percentage over the last four games. Regardless, the junior broke out in a big way Tuesday evening. Her impressive double-double of 20 kills and 17 digs were both career bests and game highs, sending the Cougars to their fifth straight victory.
CSUSM has been receiving huge contributions from a number of different places this season outside of program stalwarts
Taylor DeGraaf and
Alyssa Foster, the reigning A.I.I. Conference Player of the Year and Setter of the Year. The duo were sharp, as usual, with DeGraaf recording a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 10 digs, and Foster racking up 30 assists, seven digs, and four kills.
Still, the reason the Cougars are off to a 9-2 (.818) start is largely due to the play off many team members executing their roles. CSUSM had a balanced attack with six athletes recording five or more kills, and
Taylor Harris also contributed 23 assists to give the Cougars two strong setters. Freshman libero Waverly Richards also came up huge defensively once again, frustrating the Bulldogs with 15 digs, and giving her at least 12 digs for all eight games that she's played multiple sets in.
The Cougars also came through in the clutch, closing out the match in the fourth set despite facing set point on two different occasions before
Kelli McLin finished off the game with a slam set up by Foster.
CSUSM has now won seven of their last eight and will have two days to rest before they hit the road again, this time heading to the Bay Area to play in the the Menlo Volleyball Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Cougars will then have their first home games of the year on Monday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 10 against Hope International and defending NAIA champion Concordia (Calif.).
