Jose Rivera Named to NAIA All-America Squad

Senior guard ranked in top 10 nationally for 3-point shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jose Rivera of the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team was named a 2012-13 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball All-American on Wednesday by the association. He was selected to the Honorable Mention Team, becoming the second Cougar to earn the distinction in the team's brief history.

The selections were made by the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Committee and comprises a First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention Team.

The senior shooting guard out of Brentwood, Calif. played a key role in CSUSM's 23-7 overall record and its first-ever berth into the NAIA National Championship.
Rivera, an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) First Team honoree, averaged 11.2 points per game and shot 42.7 percent from the field, including 43 percent from 3-point range. He led the team in total points with 335 and converted a team-best 92 3-point baskets.

Nationally, Rivera ranked seventh in 3-pointers made per game (3.07), eighth in total 3-pointers made (92) and 15th in 3-point field goal percentage (43.0).

He registered 25 games with multiple three pointers and 13 contests with four or more. Rivera finished in double digits 21 times, scoring a career-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc in a 107-70 victory over Holy Names on Feb. 7.  His six three pointers in that game are second-most in CSUSM single-game history, but his .750 clip in the contest is a school record.

Rivera will graduate this May second in program history in 3-pointers made (92) and 3-point field goal percentage (.430), sixth in total assists (55), and seventh in scoring average (11.2 ppg) and made field goals (109).

Tim Steed is the only other CSUSM player to be named NAIA Honorable Mention. He earned the award after the 2011-12 season.
