Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos softball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, dropping the first game 6-0 before coming back to win the second match 3-1 at Athena Field. The No. 1 ranked Cougars dropped to 5-2 on the season, while the Athenas improved to 2-3.
Game 1: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6 – CSUSM 0
The Cougars were shut out for just the second time in their last 67 games, with the only previous occurrence being a 1-0 loss in the 2012 NAIA National Semi-final match against Oklahoma City.
CSUSM sent runners to third base in each of the first three innings, but were able to bring any runs home to get on the board. In the fourth inning, the Athenas scratched a run-home with a two-out triple, and then added five more runs in the fifth to blow the game open.
Cortney Allen (3-1) took the loss, going five innings and allowing six earned runs. Freshman catcher
Tayler Ybarra double in the game, and the Cougars collected five hits and stole three bases.
Game 2: CSUSM 3 – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1
Cal State San Marcos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on
Tani Leasau's RBI triple— the team's first of the season. CMS tied the score at one in the bottom of the fourth inning on a bunt RBI single, but the Cougars roared back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth on an
Olivia Lucatuorto 2-RBI double with two outs.
Jourdan Lamoureux (2-0) picked up the win for San Marcos after throwing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits.
The Cougars will return back to San Marcos for their home opener Sunday with a double header against conference rival La Sierra starting at noon.
