BELMONT, Calif. - Shelby Bush played a hand in both goals in the No. 13 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team's 2-1 win over NCAA Division II opponent Seattle Pacific on Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame de Namur Soccer Field.
Bush, who led all Cougars with 10 goals in 2011, scored in the 47
th minute before assisting on
Brianne Searl's one-timer in the 56
th. The Cougars handed a goal back in the final seven minutes, but despite being out-shot 19-7 by the Falcons, held on for the win.
“This is an unbelievable result. The girls played incredibly well,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. “It has to be one of the best performances in the history of our program and the result followed.”
SPU, currently ranked No. 19 in NCAA DII, is historically one of the strongest programs at the DII level. The Falcons have made three final four appearances in the past eight years, nine consecutive NCAA tournaments, and took home the national championship in 2008.
Saturday's win is the Cougars' first over an NCAA DII squad since 2008.
Accolades aside, the Cougars and Falcons played for 45 minutes without a goal, which gave Coach Pulvers and the team an unspoken confidence.
“Once we got to zeroes at halftime, we knew we had a shot to take the game,” said Pulvers. “[SPU] is a big, fast, athletic, technical team, but the will in [our] team won the game for us.”
Bush broke the stalemate less than two minutes into the final stanza.
Natalie Lara played a long ball into the box that was mishandled by SPU goalkeeper Natalie Harold. Bush ran onto it and buried a shot into an open net.
Less than 10 minutes later, Bush provided the service on Searl's first goal of the season. Bringing the ball up the left side, Bush played a low cross inside the box, which Searl cracked high into the net to beat Harold.
Bush tallied four shots and CSUSM keeper
Amanda Sears made a pair of saves.
CSUSM improves to 2-1 overall after winning on back-to-back days. The Cougars topped Holy Names 1-0 yesterday in Oakland. The Falcons are 1-1 overall.
CSUSM will enjoy the rest of its Labor Day Weekend and have a week off before traveling to face Fresno Pacific next Saturday (Sept. 8) at 5:00 p.m.
