Second-half Outburst Fuels No. 13 CSUSM in Win

Box Score
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 13 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team scored four goals in a span of 10:33 during the second half in its 4-0 victory over SOKA University of America Tuesday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.

Sarah Hopper scored twice, while Kaleigh Dodson and Heather Flores scored their first goals of the season as the Cougars earned their first after a 0-1-1 spurt between Oct. 17-19.

“I was proud of the girls. They stayed together and stayed with it. Once we got the first goal, it took a lot of pressure off and we were able to get three more,” said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers.

CSUSM outshot SOKA, 24-0, and won the corner kick battle, 20-0, but did not crack the seal until the 59th minute.

Dani Porter found herself with the ball inside the box before flicking it to her right for Hopper. The striker was perfectly positioned and slid the ball inside the right post. Two minutes later, Shelby Bush played a corner kick from the left side to the back of the six. Hopper latched onto it and headed it into the back of the net.

The onslaught continued five minutes later, once again on a corner kick. Dodson, CSUSM's specialist on the corner, played a left-to-right high-arching ball that glanced off the back post and in to make it 3-0.

In the 69th, Dodson played a short corner to the right side of the six. The ball settled at Flores' feet before she cracked it to the top of the net.

CSUSM moves on to face Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Cougars' annual Homecoming Game. The Cougars then will play Bethesda in their Senior Day on Tuesday, Oct. 30 to round out the regular season.
