Playing their first tournament round of the fall season, Coach Cindy Naval's Cal State San Marcos women's golf team is in a very competitive 7th place at the Grand Canyon Invitational, and Lisa Copeland is in 4th individually.

Competing in a field of 16 teams on par-72 Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield, AZ, the Cougars completed the first of two scheduled rounds on Monday.  Halfway to the finish line, the field, which is a mix of NCAA and NAIA teams, is currently led by Sonoma State at 303, with host school Grand Canyon close behind at 305.

CSUSM shot a team round of 316, putting them right in the thick of things.  The Cougars are one shot ahead of Cal Baptist, who finished the 2011 season ranked #2 nationally; and a shot behind conference rival Victoria (BC), who was ranked #7 last year.

Copeland led the way, shooting a superb round of even-par 72.  She is 4 shots back of Sonoma State's Spencer Heller for the individual lead.

Newcomer Vanessa Chap is next on the team, debuting with a round of +7 (79) to tie for 26th.  Right behind her is Tess Russell, who is tied for 33rd at +8 (80).  Rounding out the squad are Felicia Titus, tied for 59th with an 85, and Cora McClung, tied for 64th with an 87.

The tournament will conclude with tomorrow's second round.
