Women's Soccer Earns Tie with San Bernardino

Box Score The #12-ranked Cougar women's soccer team continued on its path to the playoffs on Sunday, playing an evenly-matched contest at home against Cal State San Bernardino that ended in a 1-1 tie.

CSUSM is now 10-2-3 on the season.

A tightly-played first half yielded no goals and few legitimate chances for either team. CSUSM had the best opportunity of the half, when a corner kick found the head of Tiffany VanSoest at the far post. VanSoest hit it well and beat the keeper, but was denied by the post.

The scoreless tie lasted well into the second half, until it was broken by San Bernardino in the 68th minute. A mis-cleared ball in front of the Cougar net found the foot of Casey Hirsch, and she put a nice finish on it, tucking it into the far corner past Cougar keeper Kaycee Gunion.

San Bernardino would hold the 1-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes, as the Cougars failed to generate many chances. But CSUSM would catch a break – the kind of break that good teams seem to get – and get the equalizer. In the 85th minute, the Cougars played a free kick from midfield into the box, and a San Bernardino defender headed it past her own keeper.

The 1-1 tie would persist through regulation, and with both teams playing close to the vest, would eventually become the final result.

Sunday's game was the last home contest of the year for the Cougar women, who have two road games remaining before their presumed trip to the playoffs.
