Men's Soccer Loses First Game of Road Trip

Box Score For the second time this season, Cougar men's soccer was on the verge of improving its record above .500, but couldn't quite make it. CSUSM lost at San Francsico State on Friday 2-1.

The cougars are now 5-6-1 on the season.

CSUSM, which traveled up north yesterday, fought hard in the evenly-contested match. Most of the contest's fireworks came in the very early minutes, as the team's traded goals almost immediately. In the 4th minute, S.F. State's Mario Hernandez hit a corner kick in the box, finding Killian LeDuke, who finished the chance. But in the 9th minute, the Cougars answered, as co-captain Chris Wyatt blasted a shot from 25 yards out through the defense and past the keeper.

The 1-1 tie would persist through the first half, and well into the second. But in the 71st minute, a foul was called on CSUSM in the box, giving S.F. State a penalty kick. Spencer Schwandt capitalized on the chance, and with CSUSM defender Trey Whitaker sent off with a red card, the undermanned Cougars couldn't get the equalizer before time expired.

CSUSM will finish up its road trip by playing CSU Monterey Bay on Sunday.
